Founded in 1838 on what was then the rural outskirts of Worcester, this cemetery is the final resting place of more than 13,000 people, including Revolutionary and Civil War veterans, governors, congressmen, major industrialists, philanthropists and other historical figures from Central Massachusetts.
Featured Project
Crematorium
Given the increased demand for cremation services, the Trustees of Rural Cemetery asked RP Masiello, Inc. to design and build a state-of-the-art crematorium, with office space for staff and comforting spaces for families. This was a challenging project that had to incorporate the latest technologies in a design that harmonized with the historic nature of the property.
Great care was taken to protect the landscape and the graves near the construction site. For the exterior of the building our masons reclaimed stone from a period barn in Central Massachusetts and hand cut each piece for the new building. Our master carpenters hand crafted custom millwork to adorn the family spaces. We managed the extensive air-quality permitting process required by the U.S. EPA and delivered the project on time and on budget. This was the third project we have completed for the trustees.
